Paulina

PaulinaThe jokingly named jovencita ("youngster") of Los Martincitos was Paulina Quechua, who was estimated to be an amazing 107 years old when she died in 2002. Tiny and strong, Paulina spoke only the native Andean language Quechua. Her living conditions were poor -- she often was seen begging for change on the streets of Villa El Salvador -- and her daughter (nearly 80 years old herself) often neglected her health needs.

Paulina was one of the first abuelitos (grandparents) signed into the Los Martincitos program (her code number was #1), and she had been involved there for a longer period of time than anyone could remember. Her attendance was astounding, especially considering her age. She walked to the Los Martincitos center every day it was open. Despite the challenges facing her, Paulina was always ready to give a smile and some kind words.

After being featured in the magazine "El Commercio" as one of the oldest Peruvians, Paulina returned to Ayacucho, her home in which she was raised. She was very happy and looking forward to going back to the place where she was born and grew up; as she left Los Martincitos for the last time, she was smiling and wishing everyone the best. Not long afterward, news arrived at Los Martincitos that Paulina had passed away.

It's often remarked that Paulina's chair at Los Martincitos looks strange now because someone else is sitting there. Paulina's last years were spent having fun with her friends and family of Los Martincitos, and she will always be a symbol of what living a full life is all about. She is dearly missed.
