Lorenza
Beginning a few years ago, Lorenza, who is 73, started to lose some weight and show signs of rapid aging. Even though weight loss is often a goal for many people in the United States, thinness is not a sign of beauty in Peru except for models and TV stars. (Adopt a Grandparent's founder Pamela Jay-Paralikis reports that the Peruvians call her La Gordita -- "the little fat one" -- and it is meant as a compliment!) There were concerns that Lorenza's health had taken a turn for the worse. Thanks to donations to Adopt a Grandparent, needed funds have gone to getting Lorenza some tests for gall bladder disease. Unfortunately, she has tested positive for the disease, and her doctors don’t want to operate because her heart is weak. Gall bladder attacks are often compared to being speared by a telephone pole, and despite her bright face, she's in considerable pain. The donations you have made to Adopt a Grandparent have allowed doctors to monitor the state of Lorenza's health. When the doctors deem it is safe for her to have surgery (or a health emergency requires it), the operation will be performed.
